Windows 98 Internet Configuration Wizard Setup

All the software needed to access the internet is installed by default with Windows 98, so there should be no need for rebooting. If your computer was bought with Windows 98 pre-installed, you should be able to start this setup immediately, so long as you have a modem configured. If your computer was previously used to access MSN, AOL, or Compuserve, call 824-6060 for technical support before proceeding.

Starting the Windows 98 Internet Connection Wizard

Please be sure to follow every step in turn. The Internet Connection Wizard sets up all of the Microsoft internet software in one sequence. It may seem that there are a lot of steps, but they are all simple and the whole process should not take more than 15 minutes.

Initial Questions

There are two ways to start the Internet Connection Wizard. If it has never been run before, it should be on the desktop, just over the Start button. If it is not there, you can find it at Start > Programs > Internet Explorer > Connection Wizard.

Either way, the Welcome screen of the wizard presents three choices. You need to select the second. Click the round button beside I have an existing Internet Account through my modem...

Then click the [Next] button to continue to the next screen.

If an internet connection has not previously been set up, the next question will ask you to choose between accessing the internet through an ISP or through an online service like MSN or AOL. Choose the first option and click [Next] to continue. If this screen does not appear, don't be concerned.

The next screen is titled Set Up Your Internet Connection. You will be asked to choose between using a modem or a LAN to connect to the internet. Click the round button beside the first option, Connect using my phone line and click [Next] to continue.

At this stage the Install New Modem wizard will pop up if no modem is installed yet follow the instructions and all should be well. If it does not appear, even better, just continue.

The next screen is titled Phone Number. Enter 519 for the area code, 823-2100 for the phone number, and select Canada from the list of countries. (Hint: type "C" after clicking on the down arrow.) That's all.

Click [Next] to continue.

Next comes User Name and Password. Enter the username you selected from your subscription form. It will be all lowercase and no more than eight characters. It is not your real name that comes later. If you do not get this right, you will not be able to log in until it is fixed.

For convenience you may wish to enter your password now. If you do, be very careful: you will not be able to see what you are typing, and you need to get upper and lower case exactly right. If you enter your password now, it will be permanently stored and anyone who can use your computer will be able to log on and use your internet account. If that is not what you want, leave the password blank, and you will be prompted to enter it each time you connect.

Click [Next] to continue.

You're not done yet!

You need to specify the nameservers or nothing will work, so,
