Windows 98 Internet Configuration Wizard Setup, IE5 Version

Initial Questions

There are two ways to start the Internet Connection Wizard. If it has never been run before, it should be on the desktop, just over the Start button. If it is not there, you can find it at Start > Programs > Internet Explorer > Connection Wizard. This is the icon for the Internet Explorer 5 Connection Wizard, included with Windows 98 since May of 1999, or on any Windows 98 or 95 system with IE5. If the icon on your system does not look like the icon to the left, or you if you do not see the icon in either place, you may need to follow the instructions given for the Original (IE4) Internet Connection Wizard.

The Welcome screen of the wizard presents three choices. You need to select the third.

Click the round button beside I want to set up my Internet connection manually, or I connect through a local area network (LAN).

Then click the [Next] button to continue to the next screen.

The next screen is titled Setting Up Your Internet Connection. You will be asked to choose between using a modem or a LAN to connect to the internet. Click the round button beside the first option, I connected through a phone line and a modem and click [Next] to continue.

At this stage the Install New Modem wizard will pop up if no modem is installed yet; follow the instructions and all should be well. If it does not appear, even better, just continue.

Under Choose Modem, your modem should already be selected (if you have more than one choose the one your internet connection will go through). Click [Next] to continue.

Under Step 1 of 3:, type in 823-2100 under Telephone number, and click [Next] to continue.

In Step 2 of 3:, beside User name: enter the username you selected from your subscription form. It will be all lowercase and no more than eight characters. It is not your real name, that comes later. Type carefully: if you do not get this right, you will not be able to log in until it is fixed.

For convenience you may wish to enter your password now. If you do, be very careful: you will not be able to see what you are typing, and you need to get upper and lower case exactly right. If you enter your password now, it will be permanently stored and anyone who can use your computer will be able to log on and use your internet account. If that is not what you want, leave the password blank, and you will be prompted to enter it each time you connect.

Click [Next] to continue.

If you do not enter a password, you will be warned that you may not be able to connect. Don't worry, you'll be able to enter it later.

In Step 3 of 3:, beside Connection name: enter BBS 42.

Click [Next] to continue.
